- The full name is Taksim Gezi Park. It is located in the city center of Istanbul and is the only green area the city has. Before the outbreak of the protest, Erdogan announced that a shopping mall would be built in that location. He prompted tens of thousands of people to go onto the streets to protest and to protect the park. However, the plan to build a shopping mall was a lie. Erdogan had plans to build an army garrison in full Ottoman style. A year after the protest, Erdogan started a purge and accused the arrested protesters of a coup attempt.
